Choosing the Right IP Camera Software

When it comes to IP video surveillance, the IP cameras themselves are only part of the picture. Beyond the physical cameras is the IP camera software you use to monitor and record video. Oftentimes cameras will not come with this software included, and it will be up to you to pick the right software for your needs.

IP Camera Software Features

One of the major things to look at when choosing software for your IP camera software is the features included with that camera. Take some time to think about what exactly you want your software to do. If you want nothing more than for video to be recorded to look at later, then just about any piece of IP software will do. However, if you are looking for something more advanced you will find there are many options.

Many pieces of IP camera software come with a variety of features. For example, oftentimes they come with advanced video analytics such as motion detection, object recognition, even facial recognition. The software can then be programmed to do things such as send out notifications or alerts should an intrusion happen via e-mail, text or other signal. Software can also be programmed to only record, for example, upon motion detection.

Make a list of the things you would like your IP camera software to do, then look for a piece of software that has the features which will make these things happen. This is your first step in choosing the piece of software that is right for your security system.

Give the Software a Try

Like most software these days, it is often possible to download a free demo of IP camera software from a company's web site. Generally these demos will be limited either in features or in the time you are able to use them. Such demos are an excellent way of getting a taste of exactly what the software is like and what it can do.

Gauge the demo software on whether or not it provides the functions you are looking for. Also look at how easy it was to install as well as how easy to use. Every person is different and will find different pieces of software easier or more difficult to use depending on their own skills and expectations.

Perform tests on all the different features that led you to choose this software in the first place. If all goes well in these tests, most likely you have the right piece of software in your hands.

Checking Out the Company and the Software

Before making the final purchase, however, you should try to find out more about the company and the software. Look for reviews of the software as well as of the company itself. You might find that even though the software looks good, there might be hidden problems such as poor technical support, or bugs which don't appear in the system until it has been in use for a little while and are difficult to remove. Reading the opinions of others who have used the software and worked with the company can give you a lot of information on whether or not this is the right piece of IP camera software for you.

What is an MDF File?

MDF file extensions can denote various types of files. MDF files can often mean a type of Microsoft Database SQL file. Its most common use is that of an image backup file. .MDF and .MDS files are very similar to each other and are both used as image copies of DVDs or CDs. An image file means that it is an archive file which is exact copy byte-to-byte like an "image". So for instance if you have a CD with lots of files on it, you can simply archive all those files into one large file with file extension MDF. You should think of MDF, ISO, BIN, and CUE files as archive files like .ZIP files without the compression. Compression means that it reduces the size of a certain file/s on disk by using mathematical algorithms to store it in compressed format, most usually .ZIP or .RAR.

How to open and extract the contents of MDF files?

MDF files generally differ from the other types of image files out there (ISOs and BINs), however you can easily convert from one to another because they are distant relatives. There are various free tools which can help you create or open MDF files including MagicISO and Alcohol 120%. Both of these tools are CD/DVD utility applications.

MagicISO Maker can directly create, edit, extract, and burn ISO/MDF files. It also can convert almost all CD/DVD image formats to one another. With MagicISO, you can handle DVD images up to 10GB, create CD image files directly from CD/DVD-ROM and also can burn ISO files and other CD/DVD image files to CD-R/RW.

A library which I advocate that anyone should at least visit once in their lifetime. Uniblue's aim is to be there for anyone who has problems with their computers. They have libraries, resources, tools and tips concerning anything related to processes, file extensions, ports, system errors, drivers. One stop site to aid you in your everyday computer needs. Tech-naive people will find this a blessing and advanced users will find this website as a great tool for re-assurance. No human can remember 16000 errors by heart! NTP - Using an Atomic Clock Receiver For Time Synchronisation

Atomic clocks are the most accurate timekeeping devices developed by man. Modern atomic clocks are so accurate that even in 100 million years less than a second of time would be lost.

This accuracy makes them ideal references for a NTP server (Network Time Protocol). NTP is a protocol widely used to synchronize computer networks across the Internet of local Area Network (LANs).

This article explains how to synchronise a computer network using NTP to an atomic clock source.

Atomic clocks are so accurate that a universal timescale has been developed called UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) that is based on the time told by atomic clocks. UTC is globally used and is the same everywhere enabling different computer networks to be synchronized to the same time.

Unfortunately atomic clocks are hugely expensive, extremely delicate and quite bulky pieces of equipment, so they are only really to be found in large scale physical laboratories or in highly technical pieces of equipment such as satellites.

Fortunately a dedicated NTP server can synchronize to UTC time using an atomic clock as a reference source by either making us of the national time and frequency transmissions or the GPS (Global Positioning System) network.

Many national physics laboratories such as NPL in the UK, NPL in Germany and NIST in the USA, broadcast a UTC time reference on long wave radio transmission. These signals can be picked up by a NTP server using a radio receiver. Unfortunately the radio transmissions are not broadcast by every country and the signals are finite.

Fortunately the constellation of satellites that make up the USA's GPS network all have an onboard atomic clock. This signal is used by satellite navigation receivers to work out location but can equally be used by a GPS NTP server as a timing source.

Using either a radio referenced NTP server or GPS time server, synchronization to within a few milliseconds of UTC is possible.

Understanding Your Computer Operating System

Over the years, computer operating systems have emerged as the most integral know component of every computer system in the world. Without the operating system, you almost won't be able to use a computer. You don't need to know any complicated commands settings or codes to be able to use a computer with the aid of a computer operating system.

Right in the first few years of computers, operating systems were not in existence. But after the invention of powerful computers, they were developed. What is known as 'punch cards' was being used to enter information's onto a computer before operating systems came to existence. To get the desired information's needed on computers, punch card machines where used. But they were not all that efficient.

Computer programmers were able to successfully design the first computer operating systems. They considered the fact that life will be easier if common people like me and you should be able to use a computer without knowing much or even noting about complex computer languages.

With the success of early computer programmers, there are so many computer operating systems these days available in the world of computers today. A lot are also still being developed even as you are reading this now. Virtually most of resent operating systems are designed with the common user in mind. An average computer user can now load most computer programs with a simple use of a mouse and just a few clicks.

Every system has a specific function to perform behind the scenes. The user will not even be able to see or even need to know that they are there. What these operating systems do behind your computer is commonly known as multiple tasking. It makes using a PC much more easily without managing computer resources manually.

Among the main basic functions every computer operating system does perform include:

* Managing your Random Access Memory (RAM)
* Managing your Hard Disc
* Scheduling of various tasks on your computer
* Providing a reasonable level of security to your computer, to prevent any external party to gain access to your PC
* To navigate various programs on your PC whenever you want to open them
* And many more

Microsoft Windows and Apple's Mac OS are the world's most famous operating systems today. Other similar computer operating systems do exist also. But they got their technologies from the famous two computer leading giants.

Two other operating systems that are rapidly gaining popularity in the world today are Linux and GNU. But they are mainly focused on the network and system marketing industry.

Learn Basic Computer Skills Fast

We all use computers in our every day activities. So many people these days use computers more often than using regular papers especially in offices. Due to the ways computers help so many people to be more efficient and effective, so many people now prefer to use computers more regularly than before. Keeping track records, doing more calculations, data processing, composing and even chatting are just few of the main reasons while most people these days prefer to use there computers more often than using normal paper works especially in most offices.

In our present life, every one must have some basic knowledge about computer. But if there is someone who is unable to operate a computer, then he can take part in basic computer learning programs easily which are accessible online and offline. Individuals who are unable to attend regular classes at some college or school, can benefit from the Internet or some offline computer learning programs. Some aged people feel embarrassed in joining classes at schools or colleges with young students so they want to master their course at home.

It is not hard to start your basic computer skills learning, because it is very simple to learn and master. There are many issues that one should keep in mind while selecting a useful source for him or her to obtaining basic computer skills. In the process of basic computer learning from home all the lessons or lectures should be in video format, because it would leave a strong impact on the learner. And the person who is delivering the lecture should be experienced and should teach in simple and easy language. The teacher should not be seen as speaking computer himself.

The teachers' system of teaching should be interesting and simple to follow because it will create interest of the learner in learning basic computer skills faster. The knowledge of the teacher should be perfect and good because if he don't have complete knowledge of computer himself, then it would be tough to handle students who are totally strange with computers. There should not be any kind of pressure on the students, as this can frustrate the students. The learning environs should be good and there should be some good materials to practice with or little interesting assignments for the students.

A completely different and better choice will be for the student to choose to learn basic computer skills faster on his/her own from a video tutorial/video lessons. Especially if the learning product series are on a DVD instead of a normal CD-rom and most importantly, a learning DVD product that can play on a home DVD player, so as to let the student easily learn and master basic computer skills faster on their own. You won't need to worry about the teachers fastness or the learning environment. Depending on your time schedules and your devotions to your learnings, You could even learn and master your computer skills faster in a matter of days, as he or she would be able to watch, learn and practice at the same time.

It is necessity today in basic computer learning, that students can repeat lectures and tutorials again and again. It is proven that those who don t have good pick feel problems and want to repeat each lesson over and over again in other to understand it. The velocity of delivery of lectures and performance should be slow and understandable because if it's too fast, then a new student would feel problem and can feel that it is very hard to get basic computer skills. And if the individual keep in mind all these views then they would reach a wise decision in choosing a source for learning computer skills faster.

How to Build a Simple Home Network System

Many people have relatively uncomplicated needs for their home networks. Even now that multiple computers within a single home are common, the systems are often not networked, with file transfer being done by means of "sneaker net", or copying files to and from a CD or by Sending files via email.

This is a great time to build your own home network, if you have always wanted to. The costs and the complexity of the systems are lower than ever. Just getting past the technical terminology used is the biggest barrier for many new home network builders. The equipment you'll need is pretty simple. You're going to need Cat-5 (or Ethernet) cables for a wired network. Think about where you plan to set up your computers to determine how much cable you're going to need and then add on about 1/5 more cable than that - you always need a little more than you think. If you plan to build a wireless network, you can skip the cables.

You'll also need a switch or a router for all of these cables (or radio waves if it's a wireless network) to connect to. A hub or a switch is just a box with ports to plug cables into - a switch has slightly more functionality than does a hub. A router is better and can handle internet connection sharing; it is almost a must for a home network. I say almost because you can use one of the computers on your network to handle internet connection sharing. However, it is in most cases far easier to just use a router instead of tying up a lot of the resources of one of your computers dealing with connection sharing.

You're also going to need Network Interface Cards (or NICs) in each computer, printer or any other device you want to be on the network. These can be your standard 10/100 ethernet cards or 802.11b/g cards which can be used for a wireless network. If you are building a wired network, you can use Ethernet equipment with 10MB or 100MB speeds. They are both so inexpensive, that there is really no reason not to go for the 100MB equipment. These devices generally support equipment which runs in the older standard as well. There is also Gigabit Ethernet, but this is prohibitively expensive for many building a home network.

Install, attach and/or setup all hardware as per the manufacturers' directions. Every device on the network needs to have at least one IP address of its own. IP addresses are those numbers you may have seen on the internet before, such as: 70-1-2-125. On a home network, your IP addresses will look like 192.168.0.1 or 10.121.0.1.

Your IP numbering should begin with the router. This device is the center of your network; imagine a star with rays of light emanating from it. Each cable or wireless signal is one of these rays of light. The ends of these rays are where your devices are. If the router has the number 192.168.0.1, then computers and other device should be numbered 192.168.0.2, 192.168.0.3. Don't assign the same address to two devices.

You'll have to read the manual for your router for the specifics on how to assign these addresses, as well as the documentation for your computer's operating system.
